Apple today announced the highly-anticipated follow-up to its iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus, in the form of three new devices to replace them: the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max.
Apple iPhone XR
At the top of the line is the iPhone XR, which boasts an all-screen glass and aluminum design and 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display. Available in six finishes (white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED), it is powered by the A12 Bionic chip with next-generation Neural Engine, the TrueDepth camera system, Face ID and an advanced camera system.
In terms of design, it features durable front glass, matched anodized band made from durable 7000 series aerospace-grade aluminum, and a glass back design that enables wireless charging. As expected, it's splash- and water-resistant, with a rating of IP67.
It supports fast and fluid iPhone gestures like tap to wake, swipe up to the home screen, swipe down to access notifications and the Control Center, and the new haptic touch feature for pressing on the home screen to instantly launch the camera or flashlight.
The Apple-designed A12 Bionic chip features the first 7-nanometer chip ever in a smartphone, along with a six-core fusion architecture with two performance cores that are up to 15% faster, four efficiency cores that are up to 50% more efficient, a four-core GPU that is up to 50% faster, Apple-designed Image Signal Processor (ISP), video encoder, and more. Battery-wise, it lasts up to an hour and a half longer than iPhone 8 Plus.
The next-generation Neural Engine is built for advanced machine learning in everything from photography to augmented reality. A new eight-core design allows it to complete up to 5 trillion operations per second compared to 600 billion in A11 Bionic. This enables new capabilities like faster plane detection for ARKit and new features that use real-time machine learning. For the first time the Neural Engine is open to Core ML, empowering developers to build apps that utilize this highly efficient machine learning engine. Core ML running on the A12 Bionic Neural Engine is up to nine times faster than on A11 Bionic, with as little as one-tenth the energy usage.
Face ID is faster on iPhone XR, enabled by software optimizations and a faster secure enclave. The TrueDepth camera system uses precision depth-sensing technology that goes beyond the capabilities and security of two-dimensional facial scanners to unlock iPhone, use Apple Pay, gain access to secure apps and many more features with a simple glance.
iPhone XR features a 12MP, f/1.8 aperture wide-angle lens with an all-new sensor, delivering faster auto-focus. Larger and deeper pixels improve image fidelity and low-light performance on photos and videos. Improvements to the ISP, Neural Engine and improved software algorithms enable portrait photos with a bokeh effect. Smart HDR brings better highlight and shadow detail across photos.
Additionally, new Depth Control allows users to adjust the depth of field both in real-time preview and post-capture to create portraits with a bokeh effect. There's also an enhanced Portrait mode on the front-facing TrueDepth camera and Portrait Lighting for dramatic studio lighting effects.
iPhone XR uses LTE Advanced for fast download speeds and introduces Dual SIM5 through the use of a nano-SIM and digital eSIM.
The smartphone will come with iOS 12, which includes augmented reality features, new Animoji and Memoji, Screen Time for helping you understand and control the time spent interacting with the device, Siri Shortcuts, and new privacy features help protect users from being tracked on the web.
iPhone XR will be available in Canada in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB starting at $1,029. It will be on pre-order starting October 19, and available starting October 26.
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
The iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch screen and the XS Max a 6.5-inch screen, both Super Retina displays. They also feature a faster and improved dual camera system, the f7-nanometre chip, A12 Bionic chip with next-generation Neural Engine, faster Face ID, wider stereo sound, a new gold finish option, and Dual SIM.
The Super Retina Displays come with a custom OLED design, and support Dolby Vision and HDR10, along with iOS system-wide colour management for colour accuracy. They offer a million-to-one contrast ratio and show 60% greater dynamic range in HDR photos. iPhone XS Max adds over 3 million pixels for videos, movies and games.
A surgical grade stainless steel band now in gold joins finishes in silver and space grey. Wider stereo playback creates a more immersive soundstage. The front and back glass design is durable glass, with improved scratch resistance, while the glass back enables faster wireless charging. The IP68 affords up to 2 metres for 30 minutes and protect against everyday spills as well.
Thanks to the efficient chips, the iPhone XS can run for 30 minutes longer than iPhone X, and iPhone XS Max offers an hour and a half longer than iPhone X, between charges.
A new eight-core design allows the chip to complete up to 5 trillion operations per second compared to 600 billion in A11 Bionic. This enables new capabilities like faster plane detection for ARKit and new features that use real-time machine learning.
In photography, the XS offers features like advanced depth segmentation using the Neural Engine, Smart HDR creating photos with high dynamic range, advanced bokeh quality in Portrait mode photos, and dynamic depth of field that is user-adjustable in the Photos app. The 12MP dual camera system features dual optical image stabilization with 2x optical zoom, while a new sensor is twice as fast. Smart HDR creates photos with more highlights and shadow detail. Larger and deeper pixels improve image fidelity and low-light performance.
Advanced depth segmentation in Portrait mode enables more sophisticated portraits with professional-level bokeh. New Depth Control allows users to dynamically adjust the depth of field in the Photos app both in real-time preview and post-capture to create portraits with a beautiful background blur. Portrait mode with Depth Control is also available on the TrueDepth camera for selfies, which includes Memoji and faster face tracking support for third-party ARKit apps. Video can be recorded at up to 30 frames-per-second, using four built-in mics, including stereo sound. Like the XR, these devices include faster FaceID.
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max introduce Gigabit-class LTE for faster download speeds, and Dual SIM through the use of a nano-SIM and digital eSIM. Like the XR, they come with iOS 12. They will be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity models in space gray, silver and a new gold finish starting at $1,379 and $1,519, respectively. Pre-orders will begin September 14, with availability slated for September 21.
