As confirmed earlier this year, AirPlay 2 support was to be coming to Sonos speakers. And today, it has officially arrived, allowing owners of select Sonos speakers to stream music directly from their Apple devices, and enjoy a host of other features.
Sonos confirmed the official launch of AirPlay 2 in a blog post, noting that AirPlay 2 support now allows you to stream audio from an iPhone or iPad to the latest Sonos speakers, including the Sonos One, Beam, Playbase, and second-generation Play:5.
This is achieved through sending sound via any AirPlay-compatible iOS app, which includes popular ones like Apple Music, Spotify, Audible, and Pandora. Sounds from other apps and services may also work: if the app or service has an AirPlay icon, the audio can be streamed to a Sonos speaker.
Additionally, users can control Apple Music playback thrugh their Sonos speakers with Siri from an iPhone or iPad. Tell Siri what to play and where to play it, such as "Hey Siri, play Pop Hits in the living room." To set this app, open the Home app, select the "+" symbol, and Add Accessory. Tap "Don't Have a Code" or "Can't Scan," select the Sonos speaker, and give it the same name it has in the Sonos app, then tap "Done."
With videos, you can also watch on your phone, but listen to the audio from the Sonos speaker, using apps like YouTube and Netflix. This allows you to benefit from better sound than you might get with your phone; particularly if you've set up a stereo pair of Sonos speakers.
With Siri enabled, you can start the music with Siri, but continue to use Alexa to adjust the volume or skip to the next one on a Sonos speaker with Alexa built-in like the One or Beam. This is set up through the Sonos skill on your Amazon Echo device. Alternatively, you can continue to use the Sonos app, or other app that works with Sonos, for direct tap control.
If you have non-AirPlay-enabled Sonos speakers within the home, such as the Playbar or Play:1, you can still AirPlay music to them as long as they are grouped with one of the newer Airplay-compatible models in the Sonos app.
