Sonos and Ikea have jointly announced a collaboration between the two companies that will see them "explore how to enable many more people to create atmosphere at home with great design, music and sound."
"When we asked people what sound they associate with their homes, many people mentioned that it is music that makes a home," says Björn Block, Business Leader, Ikea Home Smart at IKEA of Sweden.
The details are vague thus far, with the companies simply noting that they will work together to make it easier for people to play any song, anywhere in the home, without interrupting the flow of daily life. Could this result in speakers built into Ikea furniture? (Wouldn't that add another level of "fun" to putting together a new table!)
"Together with Sonos," adds Block, "we want to democratize music and sound in the home, and we want to create products designed for how people listen together at home. By teaming up with Sonos, we want to combine Ikea home furnishing knowledge with Sonos' expertise within great home sound."
Adds Sonos CEO Patrick Spence: "At Sonos we understand the transformational power of music in the home. We believe that sound should be a considered element of home design, and together we will work with Ikea to create products and experiences that make people's home look and sound more amazing."
The collaborative products will be part of the Ikea Home Smart initiative, which began in 2015 when Ikea launched furniture that included wireless charging for smartphones built into it. A year later, Ikea debuted smart lighting products. The exploration of sounds, says the Swedish furniture maker, will now be sound.
The Ikea and Sonos collaboration will be launched in store during 2019.
The Ikea and Sonos teams meet to collaborate on a new wave of products, set to hit the market by 2019.
