WiFi HiFi Holiday Gift Guide 2019: Gifts for Families

We're back with the WiFi HiFi holiday gift guides! Each week, we'll release new themed gift guides, chocked-full of great tech gift ideas for different people on your list. This week, we're looking at great gifts for the whole family.

Sharp Air Purifier

Rather than use a HEPA filter, Sharp air purifiers use true HEPA filters to remove dust, dander and even bacteria from the air you breathe. Sharp's exclusive patented Plasmacluster ion technology eliminates microscopic pollutants that traditional filters cannot trap, by replicating nature's own cleaning process of producing positive and negative ions from water vapour in the air. Some models also include built-in humidifiers to increase humidity levels, which is important during winter months when the heat is on and can dry out the air. It's a great gift for a family who has someone with allergies and/or has pets. MSRP $700

iRobot s9+ Robot Vacuum and Braava jet m6 Robot Mop

This robot vacuum (starts at $1,649 with Clean Base) and Braava jet m6 robot mop (starts at $699) work perfectly together if you want to splurge on something practical for the entire family. They communicate with one another using Imprint Link technology to provide a full clean, vacuuming first then mopping as needed afterwards. The s9+ works with the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal feature, which automatically empties dirt and debris into a bin that you can empty every few months. It works on various floor surfaces as well as carpets and offers up to 40 times the suction of previous models. Meanwhile, attach a cleaning pad ($10 for a box of seven; $35 for two washable ones) to the mop for wet mopping or dry sweeping. Both intelligently know where they've been and will map a smart route and can also remember the layout of your rooms and any obstructions in the way, like walls and furniture. They also work with Alexa- or Google Assistant-enabled devices for voice control. Irobot.com

Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus 10-in-1

If you've been on the fence about getting one of these multicookers because you've heard so many great things about them, now's the time to bite the bullet! Any of the older models will do (the Ultra 10-in-1 is my favourite), but if you want to get the newest option, that would be the Duo Evo Plus 10-in-1. Now under the ownership of Corelle Brands, LLC, the company released a number of new kitchen appliances. This multicooker comes with a new inner pot that is cookware-grade and stovetop-friendly with easy grip handles and adds new features like ferment and pasteurize. It has an easier-to-read bright displays with 48 presets that can remember custom settings, a cooking process indicator, and a new lid that automatically sets to seal and features QuickCool technology.

Apple TV+ Subscription

Add yet another streaming service to the growing list of video sources with this one, which just launched in early November. You'll be able to watch some really compelling original series, including The Morning Show, See, For All Mankind, and Servant. At $6/mo., you can get a family on your list a year's worth of TV access for $72, then renew the following year if they love it. Apple TV+ can be accessed in a number of ways, including through compatible Samsung TVs, the Roku platform, Apple TV devices, and more.

Epson EcoTank ET-2750 All-in-One Supertank Printer

These printers are great because you pay one upfront cost that's higher than you'd pay for other printers, but then you don't need to replace the ink for years. Rather than use ink cartridges, they include ink reservoirs that can hold enough ink to last for up to two years (trust me - it's true!) depending on your printing habits - basically up to about 5,200 pages with this model. Once you need more ink, a new set of bottles of comparable in price to standard ink cartridges. And a full set comes with the printer, so you can start printing right away. This one offers two-sided printing, Wi-Fi Direct for printing directly from smartphones and tablets. It sells for about $380 but you can find it on sale during the holiday season for as low as $300.

Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Purifier

An especially great gift for families with pets or members who have bad allergies, this purifier helps clean the air as well as provide extra heating during the cold winter months, and cooling during the hot summer season. It detects airborne particles and gases, and reports this information in real time via the LCD and Dyson Link app. It senses pollution, capturing ultrafine pollutants, and projecting purified and heated air using Air Multiplier technology. Lasers measure and identify fine particles; another sensor detects the amount of VOCs, such as benzene and formaldehyde, and NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide); and yet another measures relative humidity and temperature. White/silver, black/nickel, iron/blue, each comes with a magnetized remote, $750.

Sure Petcare SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect

For families who have pets and are concerned about their weight and/or overall health, this would be a really thoughtful gift. It helps you monitor and understand your pet's eating behaviours, using integrated scales, recording time and weight of food consumed by each pet, and sending real-time updates to the Sure Petcare app. Personalize your pet's feeding regimen to address a specific health concern, such as obesity, or establish a consistent and appropriate feeding routine. Connect to the Sure Petcare app via the Hub (sold separately) to monitor food consumption, seeing how much, how often, and for how long your pet eats. Each hub can connect up to 10 devices within the same household. MSRP US$180, Hub is MSRP US$72.80. Surepetcare.com

Sonos Move Speaker

Especially for someone you know is already a Sonos speaker lover and owner, add this one to their collection so they can extend the music outdoors, too. This battery-powered speaker has a tough, durable exterior that can withstand falls, bumps, rain and moisture, dust and dirt, UV, and extreme temperatures, and features a rating of IP56. Operating as part of the Sonos system on Wi-Fi with the added range of Bluetooth, it supports streaming services, voice assistants, AirPlay2, and includes Sonos' Trueplay tuning technology with automatic Trueplay, which allows the speaker to tune itself to balance the sound for the environment. The battery can run for up to 10 hours of continuous play time on a single charge. At home, Move slides on and off the included indoor charging base. Suspend mode, enabled automatically when not in use or by tapping the power button, reserves the battery for up to five days. Use built-in Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to play music, check the news, control smart home devices, and more. $499 Sonos.com

Kanto TUK Active Speakers

At $999, the Kanto TUK high-performance powered speaker with wireless capability features a newly-designed Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter for high-frequency resolution and clarity, complemented by an aluminum concave-cone woofer and a powerful 65 watt-per-channel amplifier. Available in matte black and matte white, it comes with a remote control and subwoofer output.

Instant Brands Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven, Air Fryer

For the Instant Pot-loving family, the brand, now owned by Corelle, has entered into several new product categories, including air fryers. Add two new Instant products to their collection. The first is the Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer Oven, a 10-quart, 7-in-1 Air Fryer Oven designed to create healthier versions of crispy dishes. It has 14 preset Smart Programs to easily air fry, roast, bake, broil, dehydrate, reheat or rotisserie food using little or no oil. LG OLED TV With ThinQ

If it's time to upgrade the television in your living room, go big with a new 55" or 65" LG OLED TV with ThinQ technology. They use intelligent voice control and include smart TV interfaces so you can access all of your favourite streaming services. Powered by AI Picture, the source device or service will be intelligently detected and the picture will be optimized accordingly to ensure the best visual output. Regardless of the source, though, you'll get deeper blacks, vivid colours and an all-around gorgeous picture. Plus AI Sound provides two-channel audio and virtual 5.1 surround sound. Naturally, however the best option is to get some home theatre speakers to go with it and create a totally immersive movie and TV viewing experience for the whole family. Nixplay Smart Photo Frames

If you're looking for something different from a smart display that can also function as a digital photo frame, this neat one is wall-mountable and smart. It comes with a proprietary wall-mounting and detachable cord-stand system. Motion and light sensors turns the frame on/off automatically. It also works with Amazon Alexa for voice control. Share photos and videos from your phone by e-mailing them to the Smart Frame, no matter where you are. So you can buy one for the grandparents and update the photos they see remotely. Or you can update the photos that are showcased based on the event or people who are coming over, like friends, family, Christmas-themed pics, vacation photos, and so on. You can also invite others to share their photos through the frame. It can be managed from the iOS or Android app, and connected to Google Photos, Dropbox, Facebook, and Instagram. Each frame comes with a magnetic remote. It comes in matte black, metal, or wood finishes for US$180 for the 9.7" up to US$350 for a 15.6" version (10.1" and 13.3" models are also available). Activate printing using Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana. It sells for $180 or $240 for the X version that includes a cover.

Oral-B Genius X Smart Toothbrush

Surprise everyone in the family with one of these smart and practical gifts that will help them keep up with proper dental hygiene. Sure, it isn't the most exciting gift. But you have to admit that a high-tech toothbrush is pretty cool. And this one boasts AI technology so it can help you brush for the right amount of time and using the right amount of pressure to ensure that you get the best results. Personalized feedback is provided through the connected app. It has a round brush head and uses a three-movement combination that includes oscillate, rotate, and pulsate.
