While the latest versions of smart speakers like the Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home come in various attractive fabric finish options, Portland, OR-based Toast is offering further personalization through a selection of real wood sheaths that are specifically fitted for the devices.
The Echo Dot cases are laser-cut by hand in Portland for a perfect fit, designed to "bring out the unique grain patterns in each piece of veneer," says Toast. Thus, every case looks slightly different.
Each Echo Dot kit includes a 360-degree wrap, matching top cover with speaker cut-out details, and a four-piece set of matching button covers. The slim and adhesive covers can be applied easily through a simple peel and stick process. All materials are long-lasting, durable, and made from responsibly-sourced wood veneers. They are also bump- and scratch-resistant, and can be easily removed without leaving sticky residue behind.
The Toast Echo Dot cover kit comes in walnut, ash, bamboo, and ebony, and sells for US$19. A cover kit is also available for the larger Amazon Echo smart speaker, and sells for US$34.
Meanwhile, Toast also makes stylish covers for the Google Home smart speaker. Selling for US$29 each, they come in the same four finish options, and easy peel and stick design via high-quality adhesive. The full Google Home kit includes a body wrap, top surface cover with individual cut-outs that highlight the LED indicator lights, and a separate cover for the mute button. The top surface controls can work through the wood veneer.
All Toast covers can be customizable with the addition of text, logos, and artwork through processes like laser engraving, cut-out techniques, and wood and metal inlays.
"We're on a mission to smarten up every gadget you've got," says Toast founder Matias Brecher. "Plastic is not inherently beautiful. Toast uses materials that are much more at home in your home. Real wood is a gorgeous, human material that brings warmth and personality to the devices that we interact with all the time."
Toast sources its wood from responsibly managed forests in North America and uses only sustainably grown bamboo from Asia. Toast has also partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for each product purchased. All products ship in 100% renewable energy and locally-printed FSC-certified paper packaging.
In addition to stylish wood covers for smart speakers, Toast, founded by Finnish-American designer and furniture maker Matias Brecher in 2012, also makes wood and leather covers for smartphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming systems. All products are available at www.toastmade.com.
