According to Learnbonds.com, during the first quarter of 2020, popular video sharing platform TikTok had 200 million downloads, an all-time high record for the three months ended March 2020. According to the data, this figure represents a growth of about 28% from the 156 million downloads recorded in the fourth quarter of 2019.
TikTok is a fast-rising social network platform that allows users to create 15-second videos, sound tracked by music clips. The application comes with a diverse library of editing tools, filters, and effects enabling users to adapt and remix posts by other users. Apart from sharing videos, the application also enables users to view content from other users.
Some of the popular content on TikTok is centered around lip-syncing, dancing, comedy skits, and other physical activities. The features have been appealing to young people. According to Omnicore, 41% of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24 with 56% of users being male and 44% female. The number of active monthly users has surpassed 800 million with 0be billion videos viewed each day. Roughly 50% of TikTok's global audience are under the age of 34. And users spend on average 52 minutes per day on the app. Such activity has caught the attention of leading global brands, who are leveraging the app as a marketing tool. Sony Pictures, Paramount, Clarins, Adidas, Nike, and Samsung are some of the multi-national brands that have established a TikTok presence in recent months. However, only 4% of social media marketers use the platform.
The data indicates that in March 2020, TikTok had the highest downloads in a month at 75.5 million. This figure represents a growth of about 25% from the 60.5 million downloads in February 2020. February downloads represented a drop of about 5.5% from January's 64 million downloads.
In 2019, the highest TikTok downloads in a month were recorded in December when the figure stood at around 57.5 million. For last year, the lowest downloads were recorded in February when the figure was 36 million. In total, TikTok had about 523.5 million downloads in 2019.
The surge in TikTok's downloads comes amid the global Coronavirus pandemic, which has seen consumers focus on their mobile devices more than ever as they look for new ways to shop, work, and interact. TikTok is currently available in about 150 countries with support for 75 languages.
From the data, the growth of TikTok has not been impacted by the recent security concerns raised regarding the application. Towards the end of the fourth quarter of last year, TikTok came under investigation by the United States authorities as a matter of national security. Questions have risen due to the application's Chinese ties. On the other hand, the UK launched a probe regarding how the application uses data related to young users.
India showed the highest number of downloads with 55 million or 27.4% of the total downloads. Brazil was second with 14% of the total downloads. The United States had 13.7% followed by Indonesia at 6.7% while Russia closed the top five categories with 4.1% of the total downloads.
52% of TikTok users access the platform on an iPhone, and the average user checks their TikTok account 43.4 times per day according to Omnicore. The person with the most TikTok followers is Lauren Gray with 34.8 million followers.
