Ikea and Sonos confirmed last month that the first product of their collaboration would be the SYMFONISK range, including a compact bookshelf speaker. We now have more details about the product range, which will also include an audio table lamp.
The furnishings retailer and audio company say that sound and light are "two hugely important elements for creating the right mood around the home." Thus, they've created products that combine the two.
The first is the Wi-Fi-enabled SYMFONISK bookshelf speaker, which can be mounted using a bracket, or attached to almost any kitchen rail with hooks. Position is horizontally or vertically. It will sell for $149.
But the surprise announcement comes in the form of the SYMFONISK table lamp with Wi-Fi speaker, which is designed to blend into the home, and produce both light and sound. The idea is to de-clutter the home, requiring fewer devices and cables. It will sell in Canada for $249.
Both products are compatible with Sonos' range of speakers, and can be controlled via the Sonos app.
"We knew from the start that we wanted to challenge the traditional high-tech aesthetics," says Iina Vuorivirta, one of the designers of SYMFONISK lamp-speaker at IKEA of Sweden. "The lamp-speaker partly springs from the idea of the fireplace - one single piece that spreads warm light as well as sound."
But, she adds, the design was made to be "100 per cent true to the quality Sonos stands for, without any compromises."
Tad Toulis, Vice President of Design at Sonos, adds: "Sound is a powerful part of our identity - whether it's hearing your baby's laughter or listening to that ‘80s hit your mom loved, it is a deeply emotional part of all our lives.
"This partnership," he continues, "has always been about our two companies' shared passion, values and knowledge. IKEA and Sonos recognize the importance of great sound and its potential to positively affect life at home for the many people. We set out to create products neither of us would or could develop independently. To this end, since music and light are both instrumental in creating a sense of place, we developed a product that can deliver both - the SYMFONISK lamp speaker."
Ikea and Sonos first announced that they would be partnering up back in December 2017, though details of the partnership at the time were vague. Ikea is looking to expand its smart home line-up, which already includes things like furniture with surfaces for wireless charging, and smart lights.
