More than a year ago, audio company Sonos and Swedish furniture retailer Ikea confirmed that they would be joining forces to explore new ideas, though there wasn't much more information given beyond that vague statement. Now, we get a glimpse at the first products to be born from the partnership between the two popular brands.
The first products, under the SYMFONISK range (the word literally translates to "symphonic" in English) will be on display at the Feel Home exhibition in Milan, Italy from April 9-14, combining sound and light, which the companies say are "two hugely important elements for creating the right mood around the home." The first product that has been shown is a prototype SYMFONISK connected bookshelf speaker.
"Together with Sonos we wanted to combine our home furnishing knowledge with their expertise in creating great sound experiences for every room of the home," says Björn Block, Business Leader for Ikea Home Smart at Ikea of Sweden. "And in Milan, we want you to experience the real difference that sound and light makes in your life."
Ikea has slowly been making its way into the smart and connected home world, first with furniture that included built-in wireless charging for mobile devices in 2015, then in 2016 with a line of smart lighting called TRADFI. A line of connected blinds will launch later this Spring. And this collaboration with Sonos for Ikea-branded speakers adds sound to the equation.
"For Ikea, the smart home is not about gadgets, it's about making life at home better with solutions that create a better atmosphere, make you live a more convenient life, and make you feel safe," adds Block. "The collaboration with Sonos is a great example of this, offering affordable high-quality sound in combination with a great design piece that we hope will find its way into the many people's homes."
When the announcement about the collaboration was initially made back in December 2017, Patrick Spence, CEO of Sonos, said he believed that sound should be considered an element of home design. "Together, we will work with Ikea to create products and experiences that make people's home look and sound more amazing."
If you can't book that much-desired trip to Italy to see the products in person, more details will be made available after the show. And the products will be available in Ikea stores in Canada starting August 1, 2019, as well as for purchase at Sonos.com.
