Samsung Reveals Foldable Phone-Tablet Hybrid

At its lavish press event in San Francisco yesterday, Samsung showcased the new smartphone-tablet hybrid, the Galaxy Fold.

At first glance, the Galaxy Fold is a somewhat thick Super AMOLED 4.58-inch smartphone. But it has the unique ability to open up along its long edge, revealing a larger 7.3-inch tablet-size Dynamic AMOLED screen.

Samsung is supporting this novel design with software that allows smart multitasking. For example, in the San Francisco presentation, it demonstrated someone looking up a location on Google maps using the outside display, then opening the Fold to instantly see a bigger version of the same map. The Fold also allows splitting its tablet screen three ways (one large area and two small ones were shown) to work simultaneously with multiple apps.

The Fold incorporates two batteries, one in each half of the device. These combine for 4,380mAh capacity. However, while we got a pretty good idea of the size of the device, weight was not mentioned. Also left vague was the question of durability, a rather obvious concern for a screen that is meant to fold and unfold in regular use. Samsung says only that it has "invented a new polymer layer, which makes the screen "flexible and tough, built to last."

Processing is courtesy of a new 7nm, 64-bit, octa-core processor chip, with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage based on the UFS 3.0 standard.. It will have a total of 6 lenses: three on the back, two inside and one on the front. It will ship with Android 9.0 (Pie).

The Fold will come in several colors: Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue. Billed as a "one of a kind luxury device," the Galaxy Fold will start at a sobering US$1,980. But on the positive side, we'll have until April 26 to save up for it. At least, if we live in the US. In answer to a query, Samsung Canada would say only that it looked forward to "sharing more details on retail availability in the coming weeks.
