NAB Show 2020, a trade event for content professionals in the media, entertainment, and technology industries, has confirmed that it will not take place as scheduled this April in Las Vegas. Like many others, the decision was made due to increasing confirms about large gathering because of the coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19.
"NAB has been monitoring the evolving situation on coronavirus both in the U.S. and around the globe," reads an alert on the website. "Due to the public health emergency we are currently facing, we believe that it is not possible to move forward with NAB Show as planned.
"In the interest of addressing the health and safety concerns of our stakeholders and in consultation with partners throughout the media and entertainment industry, we have decided not to move forward with NAB Show in April," confirms President and CEO Gordon H. Smith in a letter. "We are currently considering a number of potential alternatives to create the best possible experience for our community."
Smith says while it was not an easy decision, the company is grateful to the NAB Show community for engaging with them as they dealt with the rapidly evolving situation.
The NAB Show has been taking place for almost a century, and Smith says the company did not want to proceed if it could not deliver on the expectations of both exhibitors and attendees.
"More importantly," he adds, "keeping the community safe and healthy is NAB's highest priority; therefore, we are deferring to the developing consensus from public health authorities on the challenges posed by coronavirus."
Smith asks for the industry's patience as they figure out next steps and potential alternatives that would provide a "productive setting where the industry can engage with the latest technology, hear from industry thought leaders, and make the game-changing connections that drive our industry forward."
"We are grateful for each and every member of our Show community," he concludes. "It is your passion for the industry that makes NAB Show a success year after year, and it is that same passion that will drive us into the future as we look ahead to new possibilities later this year and beyond."
