McIntosh today announced the new MT2 Precision Turntable, with features designed to please the demanding audiophile.
The MT2 uses a belt-driven solid-black outer platter, over an inch thick, made from "special dynamically balanced" polyoxymethylene (POM). It is said to be hefty enough to resist and absorb external vibrations, and offer a good flywheel action for stable playback speed.
The inner platter is made of CNC precision-milled aluminum. Platters rotate on a polished tempered-steel shaft, in a sintered bronze bushing. The turntable's DC motor is driven by an external voltage-stabilized power supply. McIntosh notes that it is completely decoupled from the chassis, to isolate any mechanical interference.
The plinth has a resonance-optimized, highly-compressed wood base, finished in black lacquer. Top and middle acrylic plates help absorb vibrations. A clear, contoured dust cover is included.
An interesting design touch is the inclusion of "a subtle green glow" that "emanates from under the platter and the outside edges of the plinth." McIntosh notes that this adds "a touch of refined ambiance."
The MT2 can handle both 33-1/3 and 45 rpm records. Tracking force, anti-skate force, cartridge overhang and arm height are all preset from the factory, so the turntable is "virtually ready to use out of the box," barring a few simple setup steps.
A moving coil cartridge is included, and described as having a sufficiently high output for compatibility with both moving-coil phono inputs and moving-magnet inputs. High impedance and high output voltage are said to ensure "noise-free reproduction." The cartridge design features an alloy cantilever and an elliptical diamond stylus, for what McIntosh calls "exceptional tracking capability."
The tonearm is made from dural-aluminum, with "special damping materials." It's described as lightweight, yet highly rigid. Noise-free vertical bearings feature two precision ceramic surfaces with damping fluid. The horizontal bearing is a gimballed sapphire design.
Suggested retail price is $4,000 USD. Orders can be placed now with authorized McIntosh dealers, with shipping expected to begin in April.
