Dyson has introduced the new Lightcycle Morph, an intelligent light that, as the name implies, can morph to accomplish different things based on natural daylight and what you're doing.
Inspired by the benefits of natural light, the Lightcycle Morph has local daylight tracking and can deliver light throughout a room in four formats: task, indirect, feature, and ambient.
Human circadian rhythms, says Dyson, are still largely timed with the rising and setting of the sun. And with so many of us working indoors and only so many hours of daylight per day, especially in winter in countries like Canada, so many of us rely on artificial light throughout the week.
The Lightcycle Morph can be controlled from the Dyson Link app, intelligently adjusting the light it emits based on your task, age, mood, and local daylight. New 360° maneuverability provides customized and flexible lighting, and light quality lasts decades thanks to Dyson's Heat Pipe technology.
"With the Dyson Lightcycle Morph, our aim was to challenge the fundamental conventions of contemporary artificial lighting and find a solution," says Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer. "So we developed a light that tracks natural daylight and intelligently transforms for different uses - providing the right light, at the right time, precisely where it's needed."
Building on the core technologies of the Dyson Lightcycle task light, which launched in 2019, the Dyson Lightcycle Morph emulates many of the properties natural light possesses, but now in several different formats. Using Dyson's Daylight Tracking algorithm and three warm and three cool LEDs, the lamp continually adjusts its colour temperature and brightness in relation to local daylight. This provides the right light for the time of day depending on the user's location, says Dyson
As a task light, it offers focused, powerful light for work, hobbies, make-up application, and intricate tasks. It is engineered to help reduce eye strain and improve visual performance. When being used as an indirect light, the intelligent optical head smoothly rotates 360° to bounce light off walls, floors, and ceilings. As a feature light, it creates dramatic effects, highlighting art, colours, and decorative features. Three-Point Revolve motion enables precise positioning. And finally, when used as an ambient light, the stem lights up to create a comforting, orange glow. For evening relaxation, you can get reduced blue light instead.
The Dyson Lightcycle Morph is designed around an aluminum-polycarbonate composite stem, rotationally perforated with 16,740 apertures. Mounted on the stem is an Intelligent Optical Head with 360° maneuverability. The stem is machined to a depth of just 0.7mm and formed of extruded aluminum to deliver a balance of high impact resistance and smooth light travel. The micro apertures create a soft gradient to the lit effect and the highly reflective surface inside the aluminum core aids light down the length of the stem.
With an almost transparent aesthetic, two ultra-thin exposed cables run through the centre. Clamped at both ends under extreme tension, these cables power the optical head in an almost invisible manner - achieving a 360°, uninterrupted lit effect on the stem.
When docked as an ambient light, the stem lights up to create a comforting, orange glow and can be set for evening relaxation in the Dyson Link app with further reduced blue light. A colour warming orange filter on the dock creates the warmest light levels, reducing the colour temperature down further from 2,700K to 1,800K, emulating the colour of candlelight.
"When trying to recreate the characteristics of daylight," adds Dyson, "light quality is vital. So we developed a way to protect it for the long term."
In terms of personalization, the app can be used to adjust lighting given that a 65-year-old, for example, would need up to four times more light than a 20-year-old. This is accomplished using the Age Adjust setting - the older you are, the brighter the light.
The Lightcycle Morph also has pre-set modes: Study, Relax, Precision, Boost, Wake-up, Sleep and Away. In the app, you can also save specific combinations and assign names for up to 20 light settings. At any point, use the manual control of slide-touch dimming and colour temperature selection to define personal light preferences. Additionally, it has a USB-C charger so you can recharge your smartphone or tablet while using it without needing a separate power outlet.
The Dyson Lightcycle Morph is now available at Dyson Demo stores located at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto and the newest demo at Pacific Centre in Vancouver; as well as on DysonCanada.ca. It comes in a Desk variant for $850 and a Floor variant for $1,200, and in black/black and white/silver finish options.
