CES 2019: TCL Launches Headphone Line

Today at CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, TCL has announced a full range of on-ear and in-ear headphones.

The TCL offering will include both in-ear and over-the-ear styles, spanning four lines: SOCL, aimed at "consumers who want to be different;" MITRO, for those who want to "be themselves;" ACTV for those who want to be "healthy;" and ELIT for those who want to be "excellent."

"As America's fastest-growing TV brand, we have successfully delivered a premium entertainment experience to homes across the nation," said Chris Larson, Senior Vice President, TCL. "We want to build on that momentum by interacting with consumers in more aspects of their daily life, beyond their living rooms. TCL's long running capabilities in audio combined with our vertical integration will enable us to bring similarly rich experiences with our headphones as we have with our televisions."

TCL says that it has "honed in on what consumers care about most when it comes to music," and focused on three core values to differentiate its offerings from those of other players in the market. These are: bringing an "authentic sound experience;" bringing "meaningful technology;" and bringing "creative designs."

TCL notes that it has built "an award-winning innovation lab" (iLab) in Belgium, and is working with strategic partners to co-develop drivers and production processes to make its audio products "unique."

The four new headphone lines are as follows.

TCL Headphones: SOCL is a line "designed for consumers who want to have a fun, different and unique style." Aesthetics are said to be inspired by "happy moments," such as sunrises, sunsets or trips to the beach with friends. Headphones feature a transparent housing with a gradient color treatment. "Powerful speaker drivers" are coupled with a "comfort-fit noise isolating earbud." The goal is long-wearing comfort, with both wired and wireless options. Colors will include violet, black, red and blue.

Six models will be available initially: SOCL100 in-headphones with mic and 8.6mm drivers; SOCL100BT in-ear wireless Bluetooth 4.2 headphones with mic, 8.6mm drivers and rated 6-hour battery life; SOCL200 earbud headphones with mic, 8.6mm drivers and translucent gradient cable; SOCL200BT wireless Bluetooth 5.0, with mic, 12.2mm drivers, translucent gradient cable and rated 18-hour battery life; SOCL300 in-ear headphones with mic, 9mm dirvers and translucent gradient cable; and SOCL300BT wireless Bluetooth 5.0, with 9mm drivers, translucent gradient cable and rated 18-hour battery life.

TCL Headphones: MTRO features a "fluid utilitarian" design, for a "more universal" appeal. A powerful bass driver is said to offer extended low frequency sound. Initial models include MTRO100 in-ear headphones with mic, based on 8.6mm drivers; MTRO100BT in-ear Bluetooth 5.0 wireless headphones with 12.2mm drivers and rated 18-hour battery life; MTRO200 on-ear headphones with 32mm drivers and sound isolation; and MTRO200BT on-ear Bluetooth 4.2 wireless headphones with 32mm drivers and rated 20-hour battery life. Colors include dark shades of blue, brown and red.

TCL Headphones: ACTV is a secure "hook design" to stay in place during athletic activities. "Specially designed" 8.6mm drivers are said to provide "the deepest bass." Headphones are IPX4 waterproof rated, made of sweat-proof material. The initial line-up includes ACTV100 wired and ACTV100BT wireless models.

TCL Headphones: ELIT is the premium line. "Certified Hi-Res speakers" offer high precision audio. Traveler Edition adds noise cancellation technology. The line features long battery life, fast charging and compact foldable designs. Initial models include ELIT100 in-ear headphones with mic, based on 8.6mm dirvers; ELIT200 in-ear headphones with mic, based on 12.2mm drivers; and ELIT300 on-ear headphones with 12.8mm drivers and sound isolation.

"Adding headphones to the TCL portfolio will help broaden the brand's appeal, expanding its loyal fan base to include younger generations," said Michael Davies, Global Business Leader Headphones, TCL. "We chose the U.S. as the first market to announce our new audio categories because of this brand affinity and trust that enthusiasts will embrace this new offering."

TCL's ELIT headphones are scheduled to be available in the US by this summer. Wired in-ear and earbud headphones will be available February 1, with other models launching in the months following. TCL is exhibiting in booth #12929 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

We'll follow up when information about Canadian becomes available.
