Apple's rise continues, as the Cupertino company has now officially surpassed Asus in global market share of notebooks, ranking fourth overall, while Asus fell to fifth.
According to TrendForce, Apple snagged 9.6% share of the global notebook market in 2017 to take fourth spot, while Asus dropped to fifth, just slightly behind at 9.5% share.
Overall, global notebook shipments for the year were 164.7 million, representing a year-over-year increase of 2.1%, which was higher than the expected rise of just 0.7%. And in 2018, TrendForce expects market share for the top six brands to rise to 89.1%, making it very difficult for other players to break through.
"The global notebook market has benefited from biddings for notebook contracts in North America and regional economic recovery," says Kou-Han Tseng, TrendForce Notebook Analyst. "In 2H17, the market leader HP showed a considerable growth, driving the overall performance of notebook shipments beyond previous expectation."
As Tseng notes, HP led the pack with double-digit growth, and new record high shipments. The company's annual shipments hit a new milestone of 40 million units, a substantial increase of 10.5% over 2016. With a market share of 24.3%, HP has retained first place in the shipment ranking.
In second place is Lenovo, which witnessed a year-on-year drop of 4.9%. It enhanced sales in Asia and Europe, but still cannot make up the shipment decrease for 2017. This, says TrendForce, has an impact on the brand's performance, making its market share fall to 20.2%.
Dell increased its annual global shipments by 0.5% to 15.2% to rank third, thanks, in large part, to getting contract bids for notebooks of North America government, and growth in its Chromebook shipments,
Comfortably in its new fourth spot position, Apple, can thank innovations like its updated MacBook Pro for the increase. The company's 9.6% market share is 1.3 percentage points up from 2016.
As Asus has reduced the production of models with low profits, the brand saw a slight decline, though it still cracks the top five at 9.5% share.
Coming in sixth is Acer, which continues to expand aggressively in the Chromebook market. Its notebook shipments growth in North American market raised its annual shipments by 0.6% for a recorded market share of 8%.
