Apple Reveals its Best Of Content and Media in 2018

If you are like many, you've downloaded several apps, played many games, listened to lots of tunes and podcasts, watched movies, and more through 2018. Apple has devised its list of tops for 2018, based on top charts and selections from editors across a variety of categories.

Not surprisingly, games like Fortnite and PUBG Mobile dominated the global gaming culture, whil apps like Fabulous, Shine, 10% Happier, and Headspace expanded the practice of wellness around the world to make self-care more accessible. Overall, Apple ranks the Best Apps of 2018 as: iPhone App of the year - Procreate Pocket; iPhone Game of the year - Donut County; iPad App of the year - Froggipedia; iPad Game of the year - Gorogoa; Mac App of the year - Pixelmator Pro; Mac Game of the year - The Gardens Between; Apple TV App of the year - Sweat; and Apple TV Game of the year - Alto's Odyssey*.

In Canada specifically, the top free iPhone apps were chocked full of social media and messaging options, including Instagram; YouTube; Messenger; Facebook; Snapchat; Spotify Music; Google Maps; Bitmoji; WhatsApp Messenger; and Netflix. In the paid category, the top iPhone apps were Facetune; kirakira+; PlantSnap Plant Identification; The Wonder Weeks; Afterlight 2; My Talking Pet Pro; Oh She Glows*;
Full Fitness: Exercise Workout Trainer; AutoSleep Tracker for Watch; and Forest - Stay Focused.

The Top Free iPhone games were: Fortnite; Helix Jump; Rise Up;; PUBG MOBILE; Love Balls; Snake Vs Block; Knife Hit; Wordscapes; and HQ Trivia. The top paid iPhone games were Heads Up!; Plague Inc.; Minecraft; Pocket Build; Bloons TD 6; Geometry Dash; Bloons TD 5; The Game of Life; Getting Over It; and Earn to Die 2.

For iPad users in Canada, the Top Free iPad Apps were: YouTube; Netflix; Messenger; Facebook; Spotify Music; Google Chrome; Gmail; Google Maps; The Weather Network for iPad*; and Wish - Shopping Made Fun. The Top Paid iPad Apps were: Procreate; Notability; GoodNotes 4; Toca Life: Pets; Duet Display; Toca Life: After School; Toca Hair Salon 3; Toca Kitchen 2; MyScript Nebo; and PDF Expert by Readdle.

The Top Free iPad Games were Fortnite; Helix Jump; Love Balls; Kick the Buddy; ROBLOX;; Pixel Art - Color by Number; Snake Vs Block; Bowmasters - Multiplayer Game; and Wordscapes. In terms of music, Apple Music editors have awarded highest honours to the artists who truly represent the very best of 2018. Drake earned Artist of the year; Juice WRLD Breakout Artist of the Year; and I Like It by Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny & J. Balvin was Song of the Year.

The Best Movies of 2018 on TV App in Canada were: Incredibles 2; Isle of Dogs; Three Identical Strangers; Mandy; A Quiet Place; Eighth Grade; Sorry to Bother You; Avengers: Infinity War; Crazy Rich Asians; and A Star is Born.

The Best TV Shows of 2018 on TV App in Canada were: Killing Eve; Sharp Objects; Outlander, Season 4; American Horror Story: Apocalypse; Atlanta: Robbin; Doctor Who, Season 11; Good Fight, Season 2; New Amsterdam; Succession; and Better Call Saul, Season 4.

In 2018, Apple Books launched as a new app, and celebrated works from a diverse group of authors, including Canadian author Esi Edugyan's Washington Black; Patrick DeWitt's French Exit; and Vivek Shraya's I'm Afraid of Men. Politics dominated the Canadian charts this year with Fire and Fury, Fear and A Higher Loyalty all appearing in the top 10 best-selling nonfiction books. On the fiction front, readers remain rabid for books adapted for the screen, including Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians and Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects.
