Amazon has introduced its latest tablet, the Fire HD 10, which will offer a full HD display, faster performance, longer battery life, and integrate Alexa hands-free operation.
Selling for US$150, the tablet includes a 10.1" widescreen 1,080p full HD display, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos Audio, and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage with support for up to 256GB via an optional microSD card.
It's 30% faster than its predecessor, says Amazon, thanks to two times the RAM and a fast quad-core processor. The tablet will run for up to 10 hours per charge. And, for the first time, this Fire tablet includes Alexa hands-free, allowing users to do things like ask to play or pause a video, set a timer, find music or play a song, dim the lights, open the calendar, or show a smart home security camera feed. When connected to Wi-Fi, simply say the wake word "Alexa" and ask Alexa to control video playback (play, pause, rewind, and fast forward), launch an app, play your favourite song, or read an audiobook aloud. You can also ask Alexa to answer questions, read the news, get traffic and weather reports, set alarms and timers, and more. Alexa provides voice responses paired with visual cards on your Fire tablet's display, and can even respond when your tablet screen is on standby. Alexa offers access to over 15,000 skills so you can stream music from Pandora, check your flight status with Expedia, or order a pizza from Domino's.
You can also use Alexa hands-free on the new Fire HD 10 to control a range of smart home devices from SmartThings, Insteon, ecobee, Wink, and more. Dim the lights or adjust the thermostat using just your voice. Also, for the first time on a Fire tablet, you can ask Alexa to show you what's on your smart home security camera with compatible devices from Nest, Ring, and Arlo.
Alexa hands-free will be available on the all-new Fire HD 10 via a free, over-the-air software update. The update will begin rolling out to customers starting October 11.
Meanwhile, On Deck offers a selection of downloaded TV shows and movies ready to watch, or you can download content from services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, or load from your own digital copies. For You is a new personalized page on the home screen that helps you easily get back to reading, watching, playing, or listening by learning what you love to do on the tablet, and presenting personalized recommendations across various entertainment categories. Quickly access family photos from Prime Photos, and see the local weather from within the For Your screen. The For You screen can also be downloaded as an update for previous-generation Fire tablets.
Additional features include a durable housing, dual-band Wi-Fi support, front and rear-facing cameras. Amazon-exclusive features include ASAP, X-Ray, Whispersync, Second Screen, Amazon FreeTime, Family Library, For You, Blue Shade, On Deck, and more. The screen sharing service, available 24/7, 365 days per year, will see an Amazon expert guide you remotely through any feature of the screen should you require assistance.
Amazon's new Fire HD 10 is available for pre-order in the U.S. starting today, starting at US$150 for the 32GB version. It comes in three colours: black, marine blue, and punch red, and will begin shipping October 11.
