Martian Watches has created the first smartwatch to work with Amazon's Alexa cloud-based voice service: the feature has now been officially added to the company's mVoice line of timepieces.
With the watches, which are designed like analog wristwatches but contain smart features, users can control devices in their home, doing things like adjusting lights or playing back music, or simply answer questions about local weather or traffic, through spoken voice commands.
For it to work, Amazon Alexa-enabled device owners must download the Martian Voice & Alerts app, which is enabled with Amazon Alexa, to gain access to the over 5,000 Alexa skills.
"We're excited to work with Martian Watches to bring Alexa to mVoice timepieces so customers can easily perform everyday tasks, like controlling their smart home with Ecobee, requesting a ride with Lyft, or checking the daily news using just their voice," comments Aaron Brown, Director, Amazon Voice Services. "Voice is a natural, convenient way to interact with technology, especially when you're on the go. We can't wait for customers to try this out."
The mVoice command smartwatch can also display push notifications from social, news, fitness, and sports apps. Press the command button to read or send voice-to-text messages, or place and receive calls. Users can also assign custom vibrations to individual apps or contacts within the Martian app to help prioritize important communication.
GUESS Watches, powered by Martian, will also offer the addition of Amazon Alexa cloud-based voice service to its GUESS Connect wearable tech timepieces. GUESS Connect houses a fully-contained Martian module with a microphone and clear audio speaker. The free GUESS Connect app enabled with Amazon Alexa is available for iOS and Android. The timepiece can be purchased for US$249. Martian mVoice devices start at US$295.
"Today, it seems like most people communicate or seek out information through their fingers- either typing, texting or e-mailing- and the use of voice as a core means of communication on smartphones was in a steep decline," says Scott Szybala, Vice President of Marketing, Martian Watches. "But Amazon Alexa has made voice-first communication natural again. It is so easy to use voice to control your everyday technology, and we believe consumers will find it to be a much more real and authentic way to communicate with others through their devices. We also believe in preserving the look of classic timepieces, while providing the features a consumer is looking for in a smartwatch. Martian deepens the connection not just to personal style, but also to using voice, taking control outside of the home and on-the-go, all from your wrist."
